Medical Assisting is a great career choice for anyone looking for job security within the healthcare industry. Not only is it in high demand, but the average pay to become a Medical Assistant is substantial when compared to the requisite time and educational requirements to become one.

How Much do Medical Assistants Make?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Medical Assistants earn an average salary of $34,540, and an average hourly wage of $16.61. The average wage for a Medical Assistant can also vary depending on the industry in which they decide to practice. For example, MA’s working in medical and diagnostic laboratories make an average salary of $38,190, while those working at junior colleges have an average salary of $43,670.

More to Medical Assistant Pay Than Meets the Eye

While there is a plethora of data surrounding the topic of medical assisting compensation, we thought it would be useful to take a more granular look at Medical Assistant salaries.

Given that living expenses can drastically differ from one locale to the next, we wanted to discover the best paying cities in Medical Assisting when cost of living was considered.

By assigning new adjusted living incomes for Medical Assistants based on this data, the resulting list of top-paying cities was significantly different from our initial list that was based on average salary alone.

Methodology

We adjusted Medical Assistant median salaries across hundreds of cities in the U.S., based on the cost of living index (COLI) in each region.

The average cost of living index (COLI) for all the cities in our study was about 162. So, if a city has a COLI of 127, then it is 35% less expensive to live there than the average city. Based on the COLI for each city, we adjusted their annual wage to account for the difference in cost of living.

The Top Paying Cities for Medical Assistants

Here are the 50 best paying cities for Medical Assisting in 2019 based on their cost of living index.

1. Greensboro, North Carolina

At the top of our list of best paying cities for Medical Assistants is Greensboro, North Carolina. Greensboro is the third biggest city in North Carolina in terms of population. Although, the city’s economy traditionally centered around textiles, tobacco, and furniture, its central location has made it a popular destination for many families and new businesses. Furthermore, because of FedEx’s increased level of operations in the city, Greensboro is transforming into a both a commercial and logistical hub for many companies.

What makes Greensboro so remarkable is that in a city of about 285,000 residents, 48,400 people are employed in the education & health services industry. This makes education & health one of its top industries, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

But that alone isn’t what makes Greensboro such an attractive option for Medical Assistant professionals.
